The golden rays of summer, time off from work, and a gentle breeze provided another perfect opportunity for a casual bike ride. And here are just a few moments from my ride:
Great Vibrant Color Combo on this cruiser!
Day One of Bike Share, in Long Beach, NY
Happy couple posing pre beach ceremony
In an effort to make my cruiser more functional, I bought a sturdy Bontrager rack for my rear fender. I decided on the Bontrager because I already have the same one on my Trek. Therefore, I can use the utility type tour bag I already have, as well as my beautiful Po Campo Armitage satchel, or pannier. Now, bringing home groceries (or something more exciting) will be a breeze!
Besides using the beach cruiser for groceries on Sunday, I cycled through my new town to meet up with family at a local restaurant. I really feel riding a bike is the best way to experience neighborhoods, up close and personal.
I was disappointed that there wasn’t a rack to lock up my bike, once I arrived at my destination. Cycling is an extremely popular method of transportation in Long Beach, NY. And with the anticipation of more riders through the bike rental program, more racks would be a positive addition around town. Do you have easy access to bike parking?
Cotton Candy Colors
Mint Candy Apple, by Essie, is my “go to” summer pedi color – as it matches my Electra beach cruiser. Riding the boardwalk last night, I noticed more perfect colors of summer. With a soft, dreamy palette, these bikes elicit visions of childlike summer time fun!
The greens and blues of the ocean!
The sign on the kiosk reads, “Coming Soon.” What is coming soon?
Four hundred, yes, 400 Decobikes to the City of Long Beach, NY! What a great alternative to driving to do errands, and a ton more fun than walking!
There appears to be about 16 solar powered docking stations set up, just about ready to roll out the bikes. Options of hourly rentals via a credit card, or monthly bike passes starting at $20 – it’s sure to be great summer fun, as well as a green, and healthy way to get around Long Beach.
This link shows exactly how the program works http://www.decobike.com/ in Miami. They also have bike share programs in Surfside, Fl. and it looks like they may be setting up in It West Palm too!
I can’t wait to see how it rolls. Do your summer plans include biking by the beach?

Ch-ch-ch-changes! As I’ve recently moved from a house to an apartment, my bike also needed to make the transition. No more garage, but luckily I have a spot in the bike room! I’m so glad to now have my Trek with me, and hopefully in the future my cruiser – because the boardwalk is the perfect place to ride it!
For some reason my kickstand was blocking my pedal. I couldn’t figure out what happened, or how to push the kickstand back. I still had the rack on my car, and I put the bike back on it, and drove it to my local bike store. They took a look, and quickly adjusted for me, free of charge. What a nice welcome to the neighborhood!
Did you get to ride this weekend?
Already a fan of NY’s own Tahliah Lempert, of http://www.bicyclepaintings.com/ I was thrilled and delighted to discover (through my pal Jill) her bicycle paintings are being featured on roomy spring/summer tote bags at anthropologie.
I’m very pleased with my purchase http://www.anthropologie.com/anthro/product/24078958.jsp?null. This bright sunshiny bag is as cheerful and fun to look at as it is to carry. More importantly though, it has a durable cotton liner, with three inner pockets, a shoulder strap as well as handles, and is super roomy!
Carrying a tote with adorable bicyle graphics adds a bit of cheerfulness to whatever tasks I need to accomplish throughout my day, on or off my bike.
Jill has the Wheeled Whimsy Tote. http://www.anthropologie.com/anthro/catalog/productdetail.jsp?navAction=jump&id=24647836&parentid=SEARCH_RESULTS&color=066
